Total joint replacement surgery is a procedure in which parts of a damaged or arthritic joint are removed and replaced with a plastic, metal or ceramic device called prosthesis. The prosthesis is commonly designed to replicate the movement of a normal and healthy joint.

There are a number of conditions that may cause joint pain and disability and made patients to consider joint replacement surgery. In majority of cases, joint pain is generally caused by damage to the cartilage that lines the ends of the bones known as articular cartilage—either from a fracture, arthritis, or another condition.
If nonsurgical treatments such as medications, physical therapy, and changes to your everyday activities don’t respond to your pain or disability, the doctor may recommend total joint replacement.
Joint replacement surgery takes a few hours. The procedure is performed either in a hospital or outpatient surgery center.
The damaged cartilage and bone, during the surgery, is carefully removed from your joint and replaced with the prosthetic components made of plastic, metal or ceramic. The prosthesis effectively mimics the shape and movement of a natural joint. For example, in an arthritic hip, the damaged ball is replaced with a metal ball attached to a metal stem fitted into the femur, and then a plastic socket is implanted into the pelvis for replacing the damaged socket.
