Interventional pulmonology is a non-invasive technique to diagnose and treat lung disorders. This commonly includes lung cancer, benign airway disorders, emphysema and pleural diseases. The Interventional Pulmonology program at Vimhans PrimaMed Institute of Pulmonology & Chest Medicines is the one of the best of its kind in India offering several effective diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Our World class interventional pulmonologists collaborate with doctors in Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and Thoracic Surgery and offer our patients cutting-edge noninvasive procedures.

Diseased Treated

Our Interventional Pulmonology Program provides a wide array of diagnostic, therapeutic and palliative airway procedures. The disorders commonly diagnosed and treated by our pulmonologists are:

Lung Cancer
Lung nodule and lung mass
Benign tumors of the airways or lungs
Abnormal chest x-ray
Malignant pleural effusion (fluid in the pleural space)
Relapsing polychondritis
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)/emphysema
Hemoptysis (blood in sputum, aka coughing up blood)
Abnormal chest x-ray
Diffuse lung diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis

Diagnostic and Treatment procedures

There are several diagnostic & treatment modalities offered at our hospital by the experts in this field.

Bronchoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure that allows a physician to look inside your lungs using a bronchoscope. Bronchoscopy helps your doctor to diagnose lung cancer as well as many types of pneumonia and tuberculosis. Sometimes, bronchoscopy enables your doctor to diagnose without doing a surgical procedure.

We at Vimhans PrimaMed provide you with a number of minimally invasive diagnostic and interventional procedures that include:

Bronchial Thermoplasty

Bronchial thermoplasty (BT) is a new technique approved by the FDA, which is used to treat adult asthma patients who suffer from the severe prolonged asthma that isn’t controlled with inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta agonists, the current standard-of-care treatments.

Electromagnetic Navigational Bronchoscopy

We at Vimhans have the SuperDimension in Reach system, which allows physicians access to peripheral lung lesions and mediastinal lymph nodes through a minimally invasive, imageguided technique.

Fiducial Marker Placement for Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Some tumors cannot be approached through the traditional surgery, but are brilliant candidates for the stereotactic radiosurgery. To facilitate the stereotactic radiosurgery, the fiducial markers are commonly placed in/near a tumor, so that radiation could be delivered precisely and exactly.

Airway Stent Placement

Stents are small, cylindrical, and expandable tubes, identical to those cardiologists commonly use to open up arteries in the heart. Interventional pulmonologists utilize them to open airways (bronchial tubes) occluded or narrowed because of infection, tumors or scar tissues.

Balloon Dilatation

In this procedure a balloon is used to open an airway, more like how coronary arteries are opened through angioplasty. This is useful particularly when the airway is so narrow, as a result of scarring after a tracheotomy.

When a laparoscopy is done in the chest it’s called medical thoracoscopy or pleuroscopy. A very small instrument carrying a camera is commonly inserted into the chest cavity through a very small incision, allowing the physician to so diagnostic and therapeutic procedures inside the chest.

Cryotherapy usually destroys the airway tumors by freezing the tissue, utilizing either a rigid or flexible bronchoscopy. A probe that has been super-cooled is applied at regular intervals over the entire surface of the tumor tissue.
